How Often Should You Check Your Engine Oil?

If you've ever wondered how often you should check your engine oil, you're not alone. This is a common question we get at our auto repair shop. Regularly checking your engine oil is a simple yet crucial part of car maintenance that can save you from unexpected car repair bills and prolong the life of your vehicle. So, let's delve into the details.

How to Check Your Engine Oil

Checking your car's engine oil is straightforward! Here are the steps:

  1. Ensure the Car is on Level Ground: To get an accurate reading, make sure your car is parked on a level surface and the engine is cool.
  2. Locate the Dipstick: The dipstick is usually marked with an oil can symbol or labeled "engine oil."
  3. Remove and Wipe the Dipstick: Pull out the dipstick, wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
  4. Insert and Remove the Dipstick Again: After cleaning, reinsert the dipstick fully back into the tube, and then pull it out again.
  5. Check the Oil Level and Color: The oil should be between the two marks on the dipstick and have a clear, amber color.

How Often to Check Engine Oil

Generally, it's a good idea to check your engine oil level approximately once a month and before long trips. This frequency allows you to monitor your oil levels and condition, ensuring it's not too low or contaminated. Remember, regular checks are your first line of defense against potential engine damage.

When Do You Need an Oil Change?

Several signs might indicate that you need an oil change. If the oil is dirty or darker than a deep amber color, it's time for an oil change. Other signs include louder engine noise and knocking, oil change light or check engine light on the dashboard, and excessive mileage since your last oil change.

Typically, it's recommended to change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, but this can vary based on the vehicle's age, type of oil, and driving conditions. Always refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for specific recommendations.
